The Challenge

Identifying a reliable, affordable alternative to copper.

The Solution

Aquatherm’s PP-R material provided the savings and performance needed.

The Copperwood Condominium complex in Calgary was built over a three-year period beginning in 2005. At the time, copper prices were extremely high and the mechanical contractor on the job sought an alternative piping option for the domestic water and hot water heating systems.

With 235 units in two condo buildings and thousands of meters of pipe, the contractor, Tosco Mechanical Ltd., wanted to save the owner money while providing a lasting option. Tosco President Frank Scobie had noticed a display for Aquatherm pipe at the Calgary office of EMCO Corporation, and was quite interested. “I saw it, did some research, and liked what I saw.”

The materials were ordered via EMCO, Tosco installers completed the Aquatherm training session, and the necessary heat fusion welding tools were purchased. While some plumbers were skeptical, most were quickly onboard. And once they got past the initial learning curve, the installation of pipe ranging from 10 mm to 25 mm went quickly and smoothly.
